In 2021, a Nigerien coup d’etat attempt occurred on 31 March at around 3 am WAT after gunfire erupted in the streets of Niamey, the capital of Niger, two days before the inauguration of president-elect Mohamed Bazoum. Unfortunately it was a failure.

But disgruntled citizens will soon obtain victory in another attempt that took place 3 days ago as previously reported.

This victory however, isn’t a victory for all, especially for France. Niger produced 2248 tU in 2021, around 5% of world uranium output. Current production is from the open-pit operations of SOMAÏR (Société des Mines de l’Aïr), near the town of Arlit. SOMAÏR is 63.4% owned by French company Orano and 36.66% owned by Sopamin (Société du Patrimoine des Mines du Niger).

Niger provides over 30% of Frances Uranium used for the electricity and energy supply, which is a really big blow to the western colonial grip on Africa. The mainstream media will love to paint the coup leaders ‘Junta’ as unwanted military occupation, but visual leaking from Niger are speaking to a different tone. The success of the Niger coup follows a list of success coups that also took place in Burkina Faso and Mali.
