July 7th, 2023 – Nii Commey is a popular courageous YouTuber and the brains behind the live series online channel GoBlack2Africa. This treasure of the continent hails from America and has spent the latter part of his life traveling through the continent and showing people the amazing and questionable parts of the continent.
In a recent video, he outlined his distressing experience from attempting to support Akon’s project to assist growing African businesses. Through this project, he, like many others, decided to invest in what he considers to be a con.
After Akon’s team revealed their inability to fulfill the promises on time, they gave investors like Nii Commey the opportunity to request a refund, and as he did, the refund has still not been fulfilled.
What is most shocking is if this is true, then it is very questionable how many people could face this experience. Let’s not forget that besides this, Akon is also behind allegedly building a pan-African city in Senegal, as well as starting his own bitcoin called Acoin.
If Nii Commey’s allegations are true, one can only imagine the countless number of people being duped into these projects who might not have a voice as long as Nii to speak out.
In the video, Nii also took the opportunity to expose Akon’s staff, which had absolutely zero Africans on it. It is somewhat reminiscent of the days when we in Africa would see so many advertisements for charities in the West, yet would never see any programs pertaining to these activities in Africa.
Now Africa is no longer about charity, but about growth and investment, could Akon be the face of Western exploitation projects looking to milk Africa sympathizers?
We here support the sentiments of Akon’s supposed intentions, however, if this is a con to exploit Africans and sympathizers of Africa for the benefit of foreigners, then Akon is somewhat placing himself as an enemy of African progress and must be exposed rightfully so.
It is essential that as Africans, we get organized internationally so that when engaging in projects, we can consult people of our own Pan-African-related projects. On that note, visit our organization’s page (here) with a list of Pan-African/Black organizations around the world and engage with them when acting on such issues.
